We talk a lot about what it takes to become a better leader. We talk about discipline. Accountability. Resilience. Taking on the hard assignments.
Being the person others can count on.

We don't talk nearly enough about what happens when the leader carrying all of that never puts anything down.

On this episode of the Be All You Can Be MSC Podcast, I'm stepping away from our normal interview format for a conversation I believe we need to have more often in the military, Boundaries.

Not boundaries that lower the standard or become an excuse not to accomplish the mission. The boundaries that allow us to keep leading well. After almost 20 years of service, I'm still learning them myself.

In this episode, I break down three:

1. Protect your body before it forces you to stop.

2. Protect your mental capacity and stop believing you have to figure everything out alone.

3. Acknowledge your emotions before they begin leading for you.

I share some of the lessons I learned the hard way from ignoring an injury until I needed surgery, to realizing that every professional opportunity doesn't have to become my opportunity.

Because every yes has a cost.

And perhaps most importantly, our teams shouldn't have to absorb the emotions we refuse to process. And our families shouldn't receive only what's left of us after the Army has taken everything else.

Leadership isn't proving you can carry everything. It's knowing what must be carried, what can be shared, and when it's time to put something down.

If you're a leader who takes pride in being the person everyone can depend on, this episode is especially for you.
